We live in an activity-addicted culture.

We’re so busy that we don’t have time to just sit quietly and talk to one another. Many now spend more time with their phones and computers than with their family members.

My dad often worked seven days per week.

During the harvest season in South Florida, my dad often worked seven days per week, sixteen hours per day. He usually left home before I got up to go to school and got home after I went to bed. Sometimes I wouldn’t see him for weeks. He was a railroad agent who shipped produce to factories in the north.

The only thing that mattered.

Some of my favorite memories of my dad were those times when just the two of us went fishing for blues off Pompano Beach. I can still picture it. No one else was on the beach. We sat in the sand, waiting in the dark for the sunrise. We talked, but I don’t remember what we talked about. It didn’t matter. The only thing that mattered was that my extremely busy, exhausted Daddy, took his limited time to be with me, all by myself.

One of your most valued gifts to Jesus.

Jesus asks you to “Abide in me.” John 15:1-2. Part of abiding in him is taking time away from your activity-addicted culture and getting alone with him. Your choice to take time with Jesus is one of your most valued gifts to him. He would rather have your undivided attention each day than all the money you could every give him.
